Strawberry & Wine Tour
Strawberry & wine tour takes you to the most fascinating field route.
We are starting from Vrgorac and heading to Rastok, the birthplace of the famous Vrgoračka jagoda (Vrgorac strawberry), widely known for it’s sweet taste and hypnotizing smell. Did you know that around 50% of Croatian strawberry production is produced in Vrgorac? If you book a tour during harvest time you will have a chance to taste them directly from the plant. Enjoy the most stunning view on Vrgorac and Matokit mountain that rises in pyramid shape and watches from above. We will drive around river Matica, which flows through Rastok than goes to the ground and springs up again in Jezero, our next destination.
Fun fact: It is unusual that the Matica flows in two directions, half a year in the southeast-northwest direction, and half a year in the opposite direction, depending on the work of the spring.
When we climb to Veliki Prolog village the stunning view on Jezero field will take your breath away. Jezero (translated Lake) was once lake which was dried 80 years ago and from then it is place for many agricultural crops. The perfect harmony of nature and hard work, in this picturesque natural environment where colors, smells and tastes reign, and where tradition and production has been preserved. With over 11 million wine vines Jezero is the largest vineyard in Croatia with several native sorts of grape. Except grape there are plantations of different Mediterranean fruits like peach, plum, watermelon, nectarine, apple and much more. We will drive alongside Matica, roam between vineyards and make stop that you can taste one of the most famous products of Vrgorac.
From Jezero we will go to the viewpoint to take most stunning photos of Jezero and continue our tour to the third field Bunina. Closest to Vrgorac, but also the smallest in area, the Bunina field is home to the old Paklina mine, from the depths of which tar was extracted. Opened before four centuries, the mine was named after “hell”, the term by which the local population called and still calls black asphalt ore. Although closed in 1986, it has remained almost intact over time and is protected as an immovable cultural asset. Tar extracted from the Paklina mine was used in the paving of Imperial Vienna (Mariahilfestrasse).
The tour will end with the lunch/dinner depending on the time of departure in the small, cosy family owned restaurant, with domestic products and best service.

Shorter, 4 hours and 40km, version is also available. You will also visit all three fields but without climbing to two hills.
