Mountain tour shows you hidden gems of Vrgorac county.
Starting from the centre of Vrgorac our first stop will be village Stilja, the birthplace of Mate Šimunović Svjetski (nickname: globetrotter) who was a world traveller and travel writer who is hardly surpassed by today’s much more famous adventurers who have many advantages of the modern world. Born in Stilja, 1900 – Vrgorac, 1969 he set off in 1928 and for 19 years with his dog Globus Mate travelled 360 thousand kilometres on five continents by bicycle, on foot and by sailboat. On his journey, he visited 70 countries and thousands of islands and islets in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, where he also met with natives who had not been in contact with civilization before. All this is documented in his travel book, which was signed by many statesmen and celebrities, and in 26 diary notebooks, and on his epic journey he took thousands of photographs.
This is, in short, a travelogue of the greatest wanderer in the world, about travels by land, seas and oceans, such as the world has never remembered. – Mate Šimunović
From Stilja we will climb to passage called Milina Zasida, and from there to Poljica Kozička. After break we will continue our tour until we reach Veliki Godinj. Veliki Godinj is a preserved pearl and museum example of traditional architecture of Vrgorska Krajina and Dalmatia. Located on the northwestern slopes of the Biokovo Nature Park, hidden from view in the depths of the karst, Veliki Godinj has amazed for centuries with its architecture and preserved tradition. Urban construction of stone houses, paved stone streets, drainage canals, separate housing from stables and space for threshing grain testify to the rich heritage of the culture of living and harmony of man with nature. This unique rural ensemble has been protected as a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia since 2008, which pays homage and admiration to its builders, nurturing old traditions and customs.
From there we are going back to Vrgorac through small villages Antunovići and Zavojane. The tour will end with the launch/dinner depending on the time of departure in the small, cozy family owned restaurant, with domestic products and best service.
